Food Waste, We're Responsible

According to the UN, if global food waste was reduced by just 25%, there would be enough food to feed all malnourished people in the world.

Food waste contributes 10% to global greenhouse-gas emissions

An estimated 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted globally each year, about one third of all food produced for human consumption, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.

That also equates to a few billion tonnes of carbon dioxide and methane produced as by products, contributing to the worsening global warming problem. One of the biggest contributors to food waste emission and odour pollution comes from household food waste. It’s simple, the average person should try not to waste food. But for food waste like fruit peels, bones, egg shells, etc that cannot be avoided, it should not be mixed with other household rubbish like packaging and drink cans. They should be segregated for composting and recycling which will minimise greenhouse emissions.

With the massive growth of the global population, and expansion of scale in major cities has led to huge volumes and production of various types of domestic waste. The decay and decomposition of organic matters in domestic garbage produces malodorous gas pollution. Malodorous gas pollution refers to all gas substances that stimulate the sense of smell, cause people's unpleasantness, and damage the living environment. Odours pollution have been recognised by all countries in the world as a typical environmental hazard. Many developed countries have studied it as a single public hazard and implemented special legislation to prevent it.

This should be a wakeup call to the world’s residents - that we are responsible for our actions. ASEAN governments need to collaborate to develop an emission guideline. A regional standard to minimise food waste and odour emissions, and Singapore, a first world country should lead the charge.

In order to effectively deal with obnoxious odours caused by the decomposition of waste, you have to tackle the odourous bacteria. Green Air Biotech has developed a way to solve this odourous problem effectively.
